Love food, hate waste – start composting today

03 September 2023

The City of Cape Town is continuing to distribute home composting containers to residents this financial year.

The City is pleased to announce that we are targeting a rollout of at least 5 000 new home composting containers in the 2023/24 financial year. Budget for this rollout is R3 040 000.

During 2022/23, there was a strong effort to make up for time lost during lockdown, where it was not possible to distribute containers due to social distancing rules. A total of 11 033 containers were distributed for this period, and the public’s appetite for these containers shows no sign of satiation.

Composters are being distributed at a series of Urban Waste Management roadshow events in various communities planned throughout Cape Town over the coming year. Events are being announced on the City’s social media channels (City of Cape Town on Facebook or @CityofCT on Twitter).

Residents who would like to apply for a container should please bring along their ID and municipal account. Please note that only single residential households may apply, and only one container will be issued per household. Education on how to set up the container and make compost will be done at the collection site.

‘Home composting is a very effective way to minimise our society’s impact on the planet. It keeps organic waste out of landfills, where it breaks down into potent greenhouse gas that can speed up climate change.

‘Instead, compost made from this waste can be used for growing food, or beautifying areas for the benefit of communities. Home composting is one of the most efficient and impactful yet affordable ways that we as a society can convert organic waste to value,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.

Guidelines for how to set up a composting system without a container, as well as how to use it, are also available on the City’s website:
